Reuben Sandwich with Pastrami - Perfect grilled sandwich for autumn

We are delighted to have won a Taste of the West Gold Award 2020 for our Dorset Pastrami. It's a great accolade to the quality behind our English charcuterie products, not to mention the taste!

The beef we use is from the West Country and is cured in a highly flavoured brine and then air-dried before being cold-smoked over beech wood chips.

We make sure it's then gently and slowly cooked which makes it beautifully tasty for all types of uses.

Here's our recipe for a Reuben Sandwich which is a classic American grilled sandwich using a sliced cheese, sauerkraut and Russian dressing.  

Russian dressing is a spicier version of a Thousand Island style dressing.

Interestingly, it can be associated with kosher-style delicatessens, but in fact the sandwich isn't kosher as it uses both meat and cheese together.

The perfect comfort food for cooler autumn days.

Reuben Sandwich with Pastrami

Capreolus Pastrami - English Charcuterie

Serves 1 -  or 2 if you're willing to share

Preparation Time: 30 minutes and 10 mins to grill

 Ingredients

  • 1 pack of Capreolus Dorset Pastrami
  • Rye Bread sliced
  • Small jar sauerkraut
  • Sliced cheese (like Swiss Emmental)
  • Russian Dressing (or Thousand Island dressing if you prefer a less spicy dressing)

Russian Dressing

  • 4 oz mayonnaise
  • 4 oz chilli garlic sauce or sweet pickle relish
  • 1 tbs ketchup
  • 1 tbs horseradish sauce
  • 1 tbs Worcester sauce
  • ½ small onion finely diced
  • ½ tsp paprika
  • 1 tbs lemon juice
  • Salt and Pepper to taste (remember that pastrami is salty)

Method

Stir the ingredients for the Russian Dressing until well blended and creamy.

Butter one side of each slice of bread.

Spread Russian dressing on one of the buttered slices of bread.

Lay pastrami on one of the buttered slices of bread.  After you've loaded up the bread, keep the rest of the Pastrami in the fridge for next time.

Add some sauerkraut and lay a slice or two of cheese over the top.

Place buttered side of second piece of bread on top.

Place under grill and cook on both sides until the grilled cheese has melted.

Sit back and enjoy a delicious and warming sandwich...that feels a bit more than just a sandwich!
